About Us
Kai Ken Ginya (Silver Valley Kai Dogs) is a specialist Japanese Kai dog breeder.
We are located in the hill country in the Izunokuni area of Shizuoka, Japan, directly opposite Mount Fuji (of which we have beautiful views!) where the air is fresh and clean; cool in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Perfect for our Kai dogs.
We are currently host to six female Kais, four are active breed dogs and show dogs, and two are retired mothers taking their ease.We always aim to provide a stress-free life for our dogs. They are all free to run around the kennel (no tiny cages or puppy mill dogs for us!) and they have access to the human part of the building (with permission!). So they socialize with dogs and with people from their earliest days. We make our own handmade foods, including deer meat and wild boar meat (some of our friends are hunters) for our Kai dogs and they are healthy and rarely need any medications. We are sort of like a big extended family, including the dogs who have “gone out into the world” and live with other families in Japan (and in Poland and Italy, too!) with whom we keep in touch. We enjoy maintaining our relationships with all those who have a Ginya Kai dog.
The Real Japanese Kai Dog

We have been breeding Kai dogs for over 25 years, always working to improve and preserve the breed. In addition to breeding these lovely creatures, we have recently become an NPO dedicated to the preservation of the Kai dog, which is actually a “Japanese National Treasure.”
We are registered with the Japanese Dog Preservation Society (Nihonken Hozon Kai, “Nippo,” for short) and with the Japan Kennel Club (JKC), and our issuing of pedigree certificates is done in compliance with their regulations and registrations.
Reservation Only (so be patient)
We breed our authentic Japanese Kai Dogs by reservation only. When we have the right number of requests from our customers in Japan and overseas we arrange with the owners of good, healthy male dogs of good pedigree to have a…..”meeting”….and, if everybody gets along and the timing is right….Tah Dah! Puppies!!
The mother dog lives with us and gives birth in the main house, raising her puppies there until they are ready to go into the yard and then out into the wider world. We have Ginya Kai dogs living in many parts of Japan from Hokkaido in the north, to Kyushu in the south. In recent years, some of our Japanese Kai dogs have gone to families in Poland and in Italy. Amazing! We are so happy to help the Japanese Kai dog to become better known outside Japan. They really are excellent dogs….and good friends, too.
(A small note to fellow dog breeders: If you are looking for a Kai dog from us for resale or any other commercial purpose, or for any purpose that is not in line with our NPO policies, we can’t really help out with that.)

This ancient Japanese dog breed is rightly a national treasure. Keeping a Kai dog requires responsibility and determination and we are happy to give advice and to share notes on our experiences with these dogs.
Kai dogs are truly lovely creatures. Sometimes we think that they are more than just dogs. They are very smart, patient, very loving, can be very kind, and certainly are very energetic. Having a Kai dog is a delight; they really are family.

We can honestly say that they all look happy in body and mind. To be this way, these dogs go for good walks every day, rain or shine, snow or sun. They need it; after all, they are a hunting breed. Just like with humans, a joyful life, good air and good food, low stress and lots of love are the keys. And these Kai dogs give that joy and love right back to you.
